The ENPI Project. 2013-2014
In March 2013 a new project “Libraries Make a Difference: New Forms of Library Activity for Local Communities” was launched by the National Library of the Republic of Karelia. The project was supported by Karelia ENPI Cross-Border Cooperation Programme.
Lead partner is the National Library of the Republic of Karelia.
Project partners are
- Joensuu Regional Library – North Karelia Provincial Library
- The City Library of Kajaani – The Regional Library of Kainuu
- Kondopoga Central District Library
- Sortavala District Library
- Kostomuksha Municipal Archives and Central City Library
The idea of the project "Libraries Make a Difference: New Forms of Library Activity for Local Communities" is the creation of a new model of serving of library patrons functioning as one network. This model presumes active participation of librarians in sharing their experience, strenghthening professional cooperation and implementing new ideas in their libraries. The model also presumes creation of specialized centers on the basis of the libraries in Karelian and Finnish cities - Petrozavodsk, Kondopoga, Sortavala, Kostomuksha Joensuu and Kajaani. These centers will aim at providing people of local communities with specific information based on their needs. The proposed action can be transmitted to other Karelian and Finnish cities upon complition of the project.
Overall objective is
- To create a new model of serving of library patrons in order to improve quality of life of local people in Karelian and Finnish cities Petrozavodsk, Kondopoga, Sortavala, Kostomuksha, Joensuu and Kajaani.
Specific objectives are
- To run a joint Russian-Finnish educational program
- To establish information and cultural centers in
Petrozavodsk, Kondopoga, Sortavala, Kostomuksha, Joensuu and Kajaani
- To provide conditions to make the project sustainable upon completion of the project
- To call attention of mass media to the project

- November 17 - 23, 2013: A professional tour to Finland
- December 5, 2013: A working meeting

- December 24, 2013: A final meeting of Russian participants
- February 2014: A new place for reading, communication, creation and new ideas in Kondopoga
- February - March 2014: Opening the Information and Educational Centers – Virtual Branches of the Russian Museum
