August 8, 2023:
The All-Russian Interregional Network Library and Publishing Festival Movement "Book Lighthouses of Russia" presents a new large-scale Reading August book project (Rus. «Читающий август») – an event and communication program for the development of reading, book culture, as well as a tool to attract readers to libraries and bookstores.
Project partners: Russian Book Union, Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Ministries of Culture of Russian regions, Russian National Library, Russian State Library, JSC Russian Railways, Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives and more than 100 other organizations.
Within the framework of the project, from August 1 to 20, more than 200 events with online broadcasts will be held in more than 70 regions of the Russian Federation. Event Calendar
The key event of the project is a multimodal journey of writers and representatives of the book field to the Vladivostok Book Lighthouse festival. From August 1 to August 18, the book rally “Murmansk-Petersburg-Moscow-Vladivostok” will take place. Travelling drivers will drive about 12,000 km along the route: Murmansk - St. Petersburg - Moscow - Vladivostok. Festivals, book events, meetings with authors, discussions and lectures will be held in the cities along the way.
From August 3 to 18, the Petersburg-Vladivostok book train will visit 13 regions of Russia. Among the passengers of the "book train" traveling across the country are writers, poets, publishers, bloggers, journalists, librarians, scientists, actors, and entrepreneurs.
Every day, online viewers of the festival will be able to watch 12-hour broadcasts from each city with news about the movement of the Book Expedition by train and the promotion of the Book Rally. All events can be followed with gadgets and mobile phones. The full event program with links to online broadcasts is available on the website of the Book Lighthouses of Russia project. The Book Expedition is a symbol of uniting people across our vast country around books, shared values and book spaces such as libraries, bookstores and museums.
The final point of the Book Expedition is Vladivostok. There, at the very height of the tourist season, the first hybrid regional festival Book Lighthouse of Vladivostok will be held (August 18 - 20), within which residents and guests of the city will have creative meetings with writers, a book exhibition on the central square of the city, thematic meetings, panel and round table discussions with representatives of the book industry, entrepreneurs, public figures, philosophers and other project participants.
