The annual cultural festival Kalevala Mosaic 2023
February 27, 2023:
On the eve of the International Kalevala Day, the National Library of Karelia held a literary and musical program “The Music of the Word: Kalevala translated by Leonid Belsky turned 135 years”.
Admirers of the epic poem and Karelian folk culture were presented with the multifaceted activities of the scientist, poet, publicist and teacher Leonid Belsky and the history of his work on the first complete poetic translation of Kalevala into Russian. There was also a story about the numerous reprints of the translation, because today there are more than thirty of them, which indicates the recognition of Kalevala’s merits.
As a part of the program, teachers and students of Petrozavodsk secondary school no 38 presented Kalevala runes translated by Alexandra Lyubarskaya and poetic passages by Leonid Belsky.
Olga Rizmakova from Minsk read a Kalevala rune in Belarusian, which aroused great interest among the audience.
After that, Igor Solovyov, ethnomusicologist and Associate Professor of the Petrozavodsk State Conservatory, presented Karelian folk runes.
We thank all participants of the program who presented the sounding music of the Kalevala poem.
