01/03/2022. A new edition of the epic poem Kalevala and «Rune Tales»
March 1, 2022:
The National Library of Karelia presented a new edition of the epic poem Kalevala retold by Alexandra Lyubarskaya and illustrated by Dmitry Dmitriev (Periodika Publishing House).
The retelling in prose adapted for children by A. Lyubarskaya was first published in 1953, that’s why it is familiar to every inhabitant of our republic since childhood.
The feature of the new book is the rethought images of the main characters of the epic poem and the author's design.
Dmitry Dmitriev is already known to many inhabitants of Karelia as the illustrator of the collection «Runola. Legends of the North» (a guide to folklore creatures of the Karelian and Finnish mythology) and the book «Bylinas of Obonezhie», which contains epic stories recorded by folklore collectors in Zaonezhye and the Pudozh region in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
As a part of the event, copies of the new Kalevala edition were given to the municipal libraries of Karelia, and illustrator Dmitry Dmitriev told about his new book «Rune Tales» (a collection of runes by Arkhippa Perttunen retold and adapted for children).
At the event, a welcome address from the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences was read. The floor was given to Georgy Chernobrovkin, the President of the Library Association of the Republic of Karelia and the Head of the Olonets Central Library System; Svetlana Alexeyeva, the Deputy Head of the Petrozavodsk Central Library System; Vikrotia Cheremukhina, the Senior Methodologist of the Center for Education Development. The online broadcast of the meeting on the Zoom platform was attended by 15 professionals from different libraries of Karelia.
The new Kalevala edition immediately took its rightful place in the collection of the National Library of Karelia. You can learn more about this wonderful edition from the video prepared by Rostislav Moshnikov, a Librarian of the Center for Children's Reading.
A new point will appear on the virtual map of Karelia: Anastasiya Myacina, a Specialist of the Sector for the Development of Reading Competences of the Center for Children's Reading, prepared a short video story about «Rune Tales» by Dmitry Dmitriev.
It should be noted that this meeting was organized to tell librarians and children's reading specialists about new editions. For the children's audience, we plan to hold a separate meeting, and the traditional Children's and Youth Book Week, which will be held on our premises in a few weeks, is the best fit for this.
