03/03/2016. The runes of Kalevala on a big screen
February 29, 2016:
The National Library of Karelia in the framework of the annual international cultural marathon Kalevala’s Mosaic organized a video lecture The Epic Poem Kalevala in the Cinema. The marathon traditionally begins on the 28th of February on the International Kalevala’s Day and ends on the 9th of April on Elias Lönnrot’s birthday.
During the video lecture fragments from the best films based on the world famous epic poem Kalevala were showed. The public had the warmest feelings about the first film based on the epic poem and shot in 1958 – the Soviet-Finnish fairytale Sampo (director A. Ptushko).
Many visitors got acquainted with new films in this area. Some were interested in an unusual work of Finnish and Chinese filmmakers – the film Jadesoturi (Jade Warrior) and Russian mystical detective story The Seventh Rune. Others gained new knowledge on Väinämöinen, one of the main characters of the epic poem, watching a fragment of the documentary film Väinämöinen (a part of the series The Land of Heroes).
Students of Petrozavodsk schools and colleges have seen for the first time a sand art performance and used their creative imagination and fantasy.
The event got good feedback from the visitors.
