July 27, 2018:
In Sortavala, the Priladozhsky Museum and Educational Center of the Saint-Petersburg state Roerich family Museum and Institute was opened. Roerich was called the poet of the North, the only singer and interpreter of its mysterious soul, the master who gave new life to the bygone cultures.
A recognized master, an academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, Nikolai Roerich studied seriously and with great interest Karelian, Finnish, Sami traditions and legends, conducted scientific researches, painted and drew images of the North.
Nikolai Roerich called libraries the First Gates of Enlightenment and a librarian – the First ambassador of Beauty and Knowledge. Perhaps, this is the reason why the mission to preserve and update the national heritage of Russia was entrusted to libraries in Karelia.
A lot of efforts to open the center in Sortavala were made by the Head of the Karelian Center of Nicholas Roerich, opened in 2017 on the premises of the National Library of the Republic of Karelia, Liliana Zhokhova, and the Head of the National Library of the Republic of Karelia Marina Nikishina.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Head of the Sortavala Municipal District Administration Leonid Gulevich, the Head of the Museum and Institute Aleksei Bondarenko, the Chief Keeper of the Museum Elena Kornichenko, the Head of the Karelian Center of Nicholas Roerich Liliana Zhokhova and the Head of the Sortavala District Library Tatyana Antonova.
