17/10/2016. The National Library of the Republic of Karelia celebrated its 183rd anniversary
October 15, 2016:
The National Library of the Republic of Karelia prepared different presents for readers on its birthday: an exhibition of unique tactile books, a quiz and excursions to the library and on the Pushkinskaja Street. This day all visitors could receive a library card for free.
Students of the first year of the Petrozavodsk Pedagogical College were the first visitors this day. Students were invited to join an excursion to the library halls; they were told about the history of the main library of the Republic and shown interesting and rare editions from the collection of the National Library. Library excursions were organized during the whole day for all comers.
The great interest among our visitors was aroused by the exhibition of the unique tactile editions The World on the Fingertips, there were presented tactile books dedicated to the local history. The tactile books were created by the author team: E. A. Dobrynina, I. B. Schelupanova, E. A. Fedorova. During the whole day librarians have been showing wonderful tactile books to everyone and telling about the peculiarities of working with them.
Guests and readers who came this feast day to the library participated in the quiz Library – reader – book. Specialists of the Department of Information and Reference Service prepared very interesting questions on the book history and library work. Why did the medieval libraries use chains?, Why there were buckets in the ancient libraries?, In what country did the word “library” first appear?, Who founded the first Russian library? etc. Readers were searching for answers to such difficult questions and flipping pages of reference books and encyclopedias with enthusiasm. The found information was sometimes unexpected but always useful!
The 15th and 16th of October were declared the days of returned books. On Saturday and Sunday readers could return books after the period of return had expired, re-register and use different library services.
