23/03/2026. The Green March Campaign continues
March 23, 2026:
As part of The Green March Campaign, the National Library of Karelia held an educational lecture Vottovaara: between the Myth and the Science. The lecture was given by Anna Dudyrina, Leading Specialist in Environmental Education at the Vodlozersky National Park and a vibrant and passionate speaker.
Vottovaara has long attracted people keen on mystics; online and in advertising brochures, one can read that seids are the frozen souls of shamans, and the mountain is an alien spaceship, or even a descent into an ancient subway. The meeting participants learned a scientific perspective on this amazing natural location: the geological causes of the rectangular faults, stepped terrain, and wandering erratic boulders are no less fascinating than mystical tales.
Vottovaara is one of the newest national parks in Russia – it was established in 2023. The participants in the meeting learned how the area is being developed, how to obtain a permit to visit the park, and what obstacles unprepared tourists might encounter along the route.
The book exhibition gathered from the collection of the National Library was of a great interest. There were modern colourful guidebooks by Andrey Syrov, In the land of the flying stone – a book by a Soviet ethnographer Vladimir Charnoluski, scientific publication Vottovaara Natural Site. All of these books can be used for studying our native land – Karelia! Welcome to the National Library of Karelia – to read, educate and experience the joy of knowledge!
