April 10, 2024:
An educational program “Storytellers of Karelia: Family Traditions Transmitted by Word of Mouth” took place, prepared for the 145th anniversary of the birth of a Pomorian storyteller Fyokla Bykova and the anniversaries of Kalevala storytellers - the 160th anniversary of the birth of Mavra Khoteeva and the 140th anniversary of Maria Mikheeva. The storytellers are united by the tradition of continuing family oral folk art, the talent of performing and creating folklore works.
The program concluded the Kalevala Mosaic annual international festival, dedicated to the Kalevala epic poem and traditionally held from February 28 to April 9.
Visitors heard about the life and work of famous Karelian storytellers, saw them in photographs and video materials, heard their voices on audio recordings from the phonogram archive of the Institute of Language, History and Literature of the Karelian Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The names of folklorists who revealed to the world the Pomors’ songs and lamentations of Fyokla Bykova, runes, fairy tales, yoiks of Mavra Khoteeva and Maria Mikheeva were heard. There was a story about the works of writers and artists who met with folklore performers and dedicated their work to them. Places in memory of folk singers were presented.
We will be glad to see you at new meetings dedicated to storytellers from different parts of Karelia.
We invite you to familiarize yourself with the materials of the National Library of Karelia dedicated to Karelian storytellers in the Kalevala section.
