19/03/2024. Foreign/Own: features of the translation of the story about ”Lady Perfection”
March 19, 2024:
Participants in the Foreign/Own project got acquainted with works by Pamela Travers, read, discussed and translated a fragment of the author’s most famous story, Mary Poppins.
The story about the circumstances of P. Travers’s life and views helped the participants to see differently the text of the story, which glorified her name. Mary Poppins is full of hidden meanings, hints, irony, and this has been making the story popular among both children and adults for ninety years. For project participants who study the Karelian language and translate, it was interesting to learn about the features of the Russian-language version of the story. Writer and translator Boris Zakhoder made his retelling of the books about Mary Poppins in 1968, and he did not include some chapters from the first book in his translation. A generation of readers grew up with a modified version of the story; and was new, complete translations began to appear only in the 1990s.
In the second part of the program, the participants discussed the translation into Karelian of one chapter of the story, prepared by them with the editorial support of Karelian language teacher T. S. Baranova.
The original works by Pamela Travers in English and translations into Russian are presented in the National Library of Karelia and are awaiting interested readers.
