22/05/2023. Collection of tactile books of the National Library of Karelia
The National Library of Karelia presents to the readers a unique collection of tactile books, the main function of which is to help a special child in examining, studying and perceiving the world around him. In addition, tactile books can be used in the educational process for pre-schoolers and elementary school students of any educational institutions. The books are of great interest to teachers and specialists working with visually impaired people.
A tactile edition is a multi-colored book or manual with drawings and three-dimensional figures and objects made of various materials that are as close as possible to the original. While "reading" a tactile book (in other words, feeling objects with fingers), a special child gets acquainted with natural phenomena, wildlife, household items, literary works, monuments of culture and art.
Elena Fedorova, designer of the National Library of Karelia, creates each book of the collection in a single copy with her skillful hands and creative imagination. Ekaterina Dobrynina, teacher-defectologist of the library, who herself directly works with children with special needs, participates actively in this process.
On the collection page, you can "look" into tactile books using the Presentation option. Some tactile publications are accompanied by a video recording of an educational lesson, which is conducted by a Ekaterina Dobrynina, teacher-defectologist of the National Library of Karelia.
The collection also contains books on local history, dedicated to the Kalevala epic poem, Karelian folklore, nature, history and cultural monuments.
Tactile books are a part of the library collection; they are available at the Service Department for Users with Disabilities.
