The Service Department for Visually Impaired Users. 2016
In 2016, The Library for the Blind of the Republic of Karelia joined the National Library of Karelia. The services of the new department are designed for adults and children who have difficulty reading printed text due to injury, illness or other similar reason. The department provides literature in accessible formats for the blind and visually impaired, including talking books, braille books, and touch books. Printed publications can be read with a digital magnifying glass. All services are free of charge.
Visually impaired users have access to an electronic catalog, the Internet, electronic databases, books on CD and flash cards, and other aids for the visually impaired. Library materials can be delivered to people who have disabilities or health problems that make coming to the library difficult.
A special group of the department’ users consists of various experts (teachers, psychologists, defectologists, rehabilitation doctors, etc) whose work is related to the rehabilitation of blind and visually impaired people. They are provided with materials about the education, upbringing and rehabilitation of the visually impaired and blind people.
The National Library of Karelia organizes literary evenings, musical events, meetings with writers and poets, reviews of books, etc. for visually impaired adults and children.
