21/02/2023. Foreign/Own: the history of Cinderella and its translations

On the International Mother Language Day, the participants in the Foreign/Own program discussed the features of the translation of the famous fairy tale Cinderella into Russian and Karelian.
The first part of the program was a lecture, and the listeners learned that the famous storyteller Charles Perrault had been working on fairy tales for only six years, and during his lifetime he was known as a nobleman and a statesman at the court of Louis XIV. However, fairy tales immortalized his name. Cinderella was among the first eight works, published in 1696 in the collection Tales of Mother Goose.
Program participants, who study the Karelian language, familiarized themselves with the existing translation of Cinderella.
With the editorial support of the teacher Tatyana Baranova, the participants prepared their own translation of the fairy tale into Livvi-Karelian. They discussed one of the key issues of translation – was the shoe made of glass? – and features of the translation of the title and the name of the main character. They also spoke about the sense of the fairy tale – what it taught and how it sounds today.
Readers of the National Library of Karelia can reread the works by Charles Perrault that are familiar from childhood both in the original and translation into Russian.
