16/02/2023. The XVII scientific conference Local Studies Days 2023 in Petrozavodsk

The National Library of Karelia held the XVII scientific conference Local Studies Days 2023. The theme of the conference was “Local studies in Education, Enlightenment and Science”.
Permanent organizers of the conference: the National Library of Karelia, the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
For 15 years, the conference has been bringing together leading experts in the field of local studies and enlightenment – scientists, teachers, specialists of museums, archives and libraries.
The conference was attended by young researchers – students and graduate students of educational institutions, local historians of the city and the republic. The combination of academic scientific reports and information about practical research in the field of local studies contributes to the unification and enrichment of the local history movement in the republic.
In 2007, at the first conference there was 31 reports, and the conference 2017 had the largest number of speakers – 75 speeches. In 2023, the conference program contained 46 reports. Over the years, the conference was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the first All-Karelian Local Studies Conference (2012), the 180th anniversary of the National Library (2013), the 300th anniversary of the Russian police and the 100th anniversary of the Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the Olonets Governorate (2018), the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Republic Karelia and other memorable dates.
The year 2023 was declared the Year of Teacher and Mentor in the Russian Federation, and a number of sections was dedicated to this theme. Also, other dates of this year did not stand aside. On the first day of the conference, sections dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the National Library of Karelia and the 320th anniversary of Petrozavodsk worked.
The conference was attended by employees of the National Library of Belarus. Natalya Barsukova, Chief Bibliographer of the Sector of the Information Products of the Information Center of the National Library of Belarus, shared the experience of creating an online encyclopedia “Belarus: Persons and Events” of the National Library of Belarus. Tatyana Lagosh, Head of the Local Studies and the Project Work Sector of the Information Center of the National Library of Belarus, introduced the report “Heritage of Local Historians of Belarus in Electronic Resources of Public Libraries”.
The organizers of the conference also celebrated the anniversary of two outstanding Karelian scientists: Eino Karhu and Georgi Kert. To the 100th anniversary of the outstanding scientists, in the electronic portal of the National Library “Names in the History of Karelia”, a new category of personalities was created – Outstanding Science Figures. In this category, a page of G. M. Kert was created. There are the biography of the scientist, his bibliography and bibliography about him. Sergey Kert, son of Georgi Kert, visited the section “Philology. Linguistics. Literary criticism”. Within the framework of the section, an exhibition was presented for the 100th anniversary of E. Karhu and G. Kert.
On the 17th of February, a round table discussion Local Historians vs Historians took place. Researchers' reports caused a live discussion. Library, museum and archival workers presented their views on local history issues.
Participants in the round table discussion: Irina Takala (Associate Professor, PetrSU, Candidate of Historical Sciences); Olga Ilyukha (Head of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Scientific Center of RAS, Doctor of Historical Sciences); Nadezhda Balatskaya (Senior Researcher at the Bibliography and Local History Department of the National Library of Russia, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences); Evgeny Balashov (Local Historian, St. Petersburg); Nataliya Beresneva (the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow); Mikhail Goldenberg (Head of the National Museum of Karelia, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences); Varvara Markova (Chief Archivist of the National Archives of Karelia).
In the days of the conference, the book exhibition “New Books on Karelia” was opened. It presented local history publications published in 2022.
This year, the events combined face-to-face and remote participation. For all comers, a direct broadcast of the conference was organized. Almost every report caused a live discussion and exchange of views between the auditory in the halls of the National Library of Karelia, and listeners and speakers connected on the video conferencing platform. The conference participants and heads of the sections noted the successful program, within the framework of which active discussions on the stated topics took place.
