February 17, 2020:
The Consul of the Petrozavodsk branch of the Consulate General of Finland in St. Petersburg Johannes Puukki visited the National Library of Karelia.
The Consul examined the reading rooms of the National Library, visited the Centre for Children’s Reading, Karelian Centre of the Museum and Institute of Roerich family. In the rare books sector, the Consul was presented rare Finnish-language editions published in the 19th century: a collection of songs and runes of the Finnish people “Kantele”, compiled by Elias Lönnrot (Helsinki, 1831), and Oscar Forsstrom’s book Pictures of Border Karelia (Helsinki, 1894).
The illustrations for Kalevala created in 1974 in Eschborn (Germany) by the German artist Archibald Bayorat aroused great interest. The publication contains 12 original woodcuts depicting scenes from Kalevala. In total, 19622 publications in Finnish are collected in the National Library of the Republic of Karelia. During the visit, 11 books in Russian and Karelian languages for children and adults were given to the National Library. Johannes Puukki became a patron of the National Library of the Republic of Karelia and got a registered library card.
