The National Library of the Republic of Karelia hosted a presentation of the book novelties of the publishing house Periodika - KniiguMelliččä (Eng. Book Mill).
The Minister of National and Regional Policy of the Republic of Karelia Sergey Kiselev made a welcoming speech. In 2019, thanks to the financial support of the Ministry of National and Regional Policy of Karelia, the publishing house Periodika reprinted popular books and study guides in Karelian, Vepsian and Finnish, they will be used in language classes and will replenish library collections.
The General Director of the publishing house Periodika Natalya Sinitskaya told that last year they managed to publish a record number of books (31) and thanked everyone who participated in the process.
At the Book Mill event, the book “Peoples of Karelia” was first presented. It was published on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Karelia in collaboration with the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences at the expense of the federal budget and the budget of the Republic of Karelia, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
“Peoples of Karelia” is a book about the history and the most different spheres of life of the Karelians, Vepsians and Russians of Zaonezhie. The book was presented by Irina Vinokurova, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Leading Researcher (Sector of Ethnology, the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Research Center). Over the years, a large team of authors has worked on the book, collecting unique knowledge under one cover.
At the Book Mill event, a variety of publishing projects was presented: from projects of public organizations to cooperation with the Institute for Bible Translation. Authors invited to the event also spoke about the work on the books.
The performances of the Vepsian folk group “Randaine”, the Karelian folk ensemble “Sattuma” and the folk music ensemble of PetrSU “Toive” were the perfect part of the meeting.
