30/11/2019. A Flame Out at Sea: presentation of the English edition of the novel by Dmitry Novikov

The National Library of Karelia held a presentation of the novel A Flame Out at Sea by Dmitry Novikov published in English.
The novel A Flame Out at Sea, which saw the light of day in 2017, entered the short list of one of the main literary awards in Russia, Russian Booker. By decision of the jury, Dmitry Novikov was the only in the short list of the award, who was awarded a grant for the translation of the novel into English and its publication.
At the presentation of the English version at the National Library, the author was congratulated by Vladimir Lyubarsky, the Deputy Head of the Republic of Karelia for Domestic Politics.
One hundred copies of the books were donated to school and municipal libraries of the Republic of Karelia. This became possible thanks to the deputies of the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Karelia from the United Russia party. The Deputy Minister of Education of the Republic of Karelia Natalia Volkova thanked Dmitry Novikov and noted the importance of the fact that a work about our region can now be read abroad. The Head of the National Library Marina Nikishina thanked the author also on behalf of the readers of the library.
At the presentation, fragments of the novel were read in Russian, English and Bulgarian. The last-mentioned became possible thanks to a happy coincidence: almost simultaneously with the release of the publication of the novel A Flame Out at Sea in English, a translation of the book into Bulgarian has appeared. Dmitry Novikov also presented the Bulgarian translation at the meeting at the library. According to the writer, the translation of the book into foreign languages will not only enjoy a large readership, but also will tell the world about Karelia, its history and spirit.
The novel A Flame Out at Sea became the starting point for new creative projects. The National Theater of Karelia is preparing a play based on the novel. This was told by the Head of the Department of Informational, Advertising and Design Activities of the National Theater of the Republic of Karelia Anna Kalashnik.
Representatives of the English Language School of the Center for Education and Culture Anastasia Alekseeva and Irina Pugina spoke about cooperation of the writer and the school.
The presentation was a great success: the meeting with the writer was attended by his friends, readers, teachers and students of Petrozavodsk State University, Petrozavodsk Pedagogical College, Gymnasium No. 17 and other educational organizations and library specialists. At the end of the presentation, everyone could get an autograph of Dmitry Novikov, the finalist of the Literary Prize Russian Booker -2017, winner of many literary prizes and honored cultural worker of the Republic of Karelia.
