20/11/2019. The program Colors of Karelia
November 16, 2019:
The National Library of Karelia met the guests of the holiday Kraski Karelii (Eng. Colors of Karelia) with a diverse palette of colors.
For two hours, the library halls turned into a large open creative workshop. Adults and children studied the secrets of ancient musical instruments kantele and jouhikko together with ethnomusicologist Igor Solovyov, made dolls and forest inhabitants of Karelia with their own hands, created elements of a folk costume and, of course, read, played and painted fairy tales!
Vladimir Odintsov, an artist and designer, and Roman Kirillov, the author of graphic comics Elias and the Heroes of Kalevala, helped them. Together with Roman, the little readers became a team of adventurers and boldly went to the grim Pohjola in search of Sampo.
The master class Book Pictures by Vladimir Odintsov was a great opportunity for adults to show their creative imagination and capture the created images on paper. It turned out that it doesn’t matter if you can draw or can’t! While the adults were revealing their artistic talents, the young participants of the lesson read the Tales of the Northern Neighbors using unique tactile books created in the National Library of Karelia and unraveled the secrets of the ancient tales. The guys found out why in Karelian tales the sly Fox is treated with respect and together they helped the fairy hedgehog reveal the secret of the appearance of a huge bump on his forehead.
Both adults and children admired the editions of past centuries devoted to Karelia.
Specialists of the rare books sector told how the borders of Karelia were changing and what events and people had a huge impact on our history and culture.
The magical atmosphere of Karelian traditions reigned at the program Back to the Past: Karelian Traditions and Customs in the Department of National and Local Literature. The participants of the program had an opportunity to show their knowledge and the sense of humor at the family game-quiz Riddles from the Basket.
Well, what a holiday without gifts and beautiful costumes? Moreover, the guests did them with their own hands under the guidance of our masters.
In conclusion, library specialists, within the framework of the Russian Museum: Virtual Branch Project, presented the northern palette of colors. The lecture participants saw reproductions of paintings by Ivan Shishkin and Arkhip Kuindzhi, Nikolai Roerich and Vasily Meshkov, illustrations of the epic poem Kalevala made by Nikolai Bryukhanov and Tamara Yufa. At the end, everyone could try their hand at creating paintings in the technique of mixed drawing.
