June 29, 2019:
In the framework of the City Day, the National Library of Karelia took part in a traditional festival Illusions of the Old Town, which was held in the historic district. Once a year, residents and visitors of our town are transferred to 100 years in the past, where scenes of the life of a provincial city are recreated before their eyes. This time, the theme of the historical reenactment was Petrozavodsk Crafts. The Opening of the City Theater.
In the bibliomobile, the National Library presented for holiday guests the program How the Shirt has Grown in the Field. Everyone with the help of an interactive game module got acquainted with the process of growing and processing flax. The secret of the masters of the Karelian and Finnish epic poem Kalevala was revealed through tactile books from the library collection. The participants of the event discovered the peculiarities and tricks of Karelian costumes, through quiz questions they learned about the magical properties of elements of traditional clothing, and looked at the making and purpose of musical instruments in a new way.
Our ancestors used all made fabric in the household, it was also used in making amulet dolls. A special master class was organized for visitors of the “Illusions of the Old City”, where they created such dolls with their own hands.
In the bibliomobile, there was a photo exhibition dedicated to craftsmen of out land, and also books about industries of Karelia and history of local theatres.
In November 1809, a scandalous play The Mermaid of Olonets was staged in our city theater. Petrozavodsk officials, who were also actors of the first theater, made a big mistake, inadmissible in that time: neither the play nor the stage production was not censored.
In this regard, a denunciation was written to the trustee of the St. Petersburg School District N. N. Novoseltsev, thanks to which the story of the play The Mermaid of Olonets gained the status of a city legend and was reflected in journalistic essays by the famous local historian K. M. Petrov and in the story The Enchantress by B. Guschin.
Together with the National Library, the guests of the festival became more familiar with the unusual play, felt like the actors of the first Petrozavodsk Theater and took part in an improvised play.
This is not the last holiday in which the National Library of Karelia takes part. Do not miss those interesting and informative events that take place with our participation. See you soon, friends!
