09/06/2026. "Features of the Hydrographic Network of the Karelian and Kola Region": a meeting with a scientist at the National Library
June 8, 2026:
The National Library of Karelia held a lecture "Features of the Hydrographic Network of the Karelian and Kola Region".
Fresh water is a strategic resource of the 21st century. Karelia is fortunate to have an abundance of water: 27,000 rivers and over 60,000 lakes – a real treasure! Guides and geography enthusiasts attended the educational meeting; they learned about the geological and climatic factors that define Karelia's unique features influence the flow of its rivers, and the lake fullness.
What transformations has our region's hydrographic network undergone due to human activity? Why is Lake Onega more accurately called a reservoir? Is it true that the water levels in Karelia's lakes are declining? Participants in the program received answers to these and other questions from a knowledgeable professional: Alexey Tolstikov, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Head of the Geography and Hydrology Laboratory at the Institute of Northern Water Problems, the Karelian Research Centre of the RAS, and Chairman of the Karelia Branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
Books and articles by scientists of the Karelian Research Centre studying hydrology and hydrography are available for order through the electronic catalogue of the National Library of Karelia.
The lecture was a part of an exhibition dedicated to the geographer K. I. Arsenyev. The exhibition can be visited during library opening hours until June 11.
