12/04/2026. Walking tour on Folklore Petrozavodsk
April 12, 2026:
At the end of the annual international festival Kalevala’s Mosaic, a walking tour The Folklore Petrozavodsk took place as part of Let’s Read Streets like Books project.
Participants learned about the lives and works of talented storytellers from across Karelia and the places of their memory on the streets of Petrozavodsk. During the walk, audio recordings of Karelian runes and joiks, Russian bylinas, and spiritual poems performed by folk singers were played.
The Folklore Petrozavodsk walking tour is a tribute to the Karelian peasants who preserved the invaluable oral folklore that forms a vital part of the culture of the Karelian region. Karelian runes formed the basis of the Karelian and Finnish epic poem Kalevala.
