In the framework of the Year of Finland in Karelia the National Library of the Republic of Karelia opened an exhibition The Grand Duchy of Finland: 100 years with Russia (1809 - 1917). The exhibition presents books published in the 18th and the beginning of the 20th century from the rare collection of the National Library of Karelia and dedicated to the history, economics, geography and culture of Finland that had been a part of the Russian Empire for 108 years.
In March 1809 in Finland the Diet of Porvoo was organized to establish in the presence of Emperor of Russia Alexander I the Grand Principality of Finland with special administrative status, the Committee for Finnish Affairs, the Government Council (since 1816 Senate), the tax system, the law on the Lutheran church and the old class privileges. Since then and up to 1917 Finland had been developed together with Russia for 108 years.
The exhibition presents editions covering various aspects of the history of the Grand Duchy of Finland as a part of the Russian Empire. Books by Mikhail Borodkin are dedicated to the history of Finland during the time of Alexander I and Nikolai I (St-Petersburg, 1915), the article Finland (St-Petersburg, 1898) describes the geography and population of the Northern land, customs and traditions of Finns. Here are also legislative materials of the Grand Duchy of Finland revealing important issues of administrative and civil law.
The exhibition is open during the opening hours of the library. We invite all comers.
