On April 30, Russia celebrates the Day of Indigenous Peoples. The commemorative date was established on November 4, 2025, by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The main goal of establishing the holiday is to preserve the traditional way of life, activities, crafts, and unique culture of Russia's indigenous peoples. In the Republic of Karelia, the indigenous peoples include the Karelians, Vepsians, and Sami. Despite their small numbers, these indigenous peoples strive to preserve their identity, customs, and cultural traditions.
More information about the traditions of the indigenous peoples of the Russian North can be found in publications available in the online catalogue of the National Library of Karelia.
