17/10/2026. The National Library of Karelia: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow
According to the invitation of Don State Public Library, the National Library of Karelia took part in the webinar cycle Keepers of Culture and History of the Peoples of Russia. The webinar The National Library of Karelia: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow was timed to coincide with the 35th anniversary of the library being granted the status of a national library and the 193rd anniversary of the first public library in Petrozavodsk. A. Zhelyabovskaya, Director of Don State Public Library, and M. Nikishina, Director of the National Library of Karelia, delivered their welcoming speeches to the participants.
The webinar participants learned about the history of the creation, development, and modelling of the National Library of the Republic of Karelia. The speakers told about library’s responsibilities regarding the collection, preservation, and promotion of Karelia’s documentary heritage – which serves as part of the national memory of both Russia and Karelia – as well as the organization of library services for people with disabilities, the encouragement of reading among children and adolescents, the operation of a book kiosk within the library, and the hosting of the Library Association of the Republic of Karelia’s headquarters on the library’s premises. As a homework assignment, participants were invited to complete a Karelia crossword puzzle; those who were among the first to submit correct answers will receive a gift from the National Library of the Republic of Karelia. More than 400 people took part in the webinar.
