17/03/2015. Presentation of the new edition of Kalevala
A presentation of a new edition of the epic poem Kalevala was held in the National Library. The book was published by the publishing house BAREA in 2014 in the classic translation by L. P. Belsky.
Leonid Petrovich Belsky is an Associate Professor of Moscow University who made a complete verse translation of the epic poem into Russian in 1888. He got the highest award of the Russian Academy of Sciences - the Pushkin Prize for his work. Even today his translation remains unsurpassed. The Kalevala in translation by Leonid Belsky was published for the last time in 1989 in Petrozavodsk. Illustrations for the new edition were made by a famous Karelian painter B. Akbulatov.
A lector of the Karelian College of Culture and Arts Rimma Korendiukhina and a student of Petrozavodsk State University Anrdei Sukhov read runes of Kalevala. An Associate Professor of Petrozavodsk State Conservatory and a musician Igor Solovjov played music at the evening.
The guests of the presentation saw a collection of costumes “Kalevala” made by designer Irina Poroshina.
