18/03/2013. The international seminar "New forms of Library activity in the Framework on the Concept "Library as a Third Place"
On the 14th of February in Petrozavodsk the international seminar ”New forms of Library Activity in the Framework on the Concept “Library as a Third Place” was held. This event was organized by the National Library in the framework of the project “The Year Germany-Russia in Petrozavodsk”.
The concept of ”a third place” implies creation of a space where people want to be, meet and communicate in their spare time.
Librarians from Germany, Finland, Moscow and Karelia discussed how to make library such kind of venue, provide the client with comfort and access to modern technologies.
The first part of the day our guests told about new forms of library activity in their libraries. Then the participants continued creative work in groups that created library projects capable to attract readers and change the implicit stereotype of library in general. During a friendly debate original ideas of international cooperation between specialists from Russia, Germany and Russia have emerged.
In the seminar 55 specialists including 26 library professionals from municipal libraries and cultural institutions of the Republic of Karelia and 20 specialists of the libraries of Karelia: the National Library of the Republic of Karelia and the Children and Youth Library of Karelia named after V. Morozov took place. Among the participants there were librarians from Pryazha, Prionezhsky, Segezha, Suojyarvi, Louhi, Sortavala, Kondopoga, Medvezhyegorsk and Pudozh municipal districts of Karelia and Petrozavodsk urban district.
The seminar was attended by specialists from libraries of other institutions of Petrozavodsk: the Scientific Library of Petrozavodsk State University, the Scientific Library of Petrozavodsk State Conservatory and the Scientific Library of Karelian Research Centre of RAS. Among the guests of the seminar there were Director of the Hämeenlinna City Library Inkeri Jurvanen, Deputy Director of the City Library of Tubingen (Germany) Karen Scherer and Head of PR Department of the City Library of Tubingen Karen Scherer and the Training Centre “School of Librarian Leadership” of Pushkin Library Foundation and Deputy Director of Moscow Turgenev Public Library Andrei Lisitsky.
