04/03/2015. Presentation of the epic poem Kalevala in the North Karelian
A new edition of the epic poem Kalevala in the North Karelian was presented in the National Library of the Republic of Karelia.
The presentation was organized by the Karjalan Sivistysseura (“The Society for Promotion of the Karelian Culture”), the Petrozavodsk office of the Consulate General of Finland, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Karelia and the National Library of the Republic of Karelia.
The Kalevala was translated in the North Karelian by a resident of Petrozavodsk Raisa Remshueva. Raisa Remshueva was born in 1950 in the village of Tolloreka in Kalevalsky District of the Republic of Karelia. She studied at the Faculty of Baltic and Finnish Philology of Petrozavodsk State University. She was a researcher at the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Research Center of RAS. The subject of her research was a collection of Finnish folk poetry Kanteletar compiled by Elias Lönnrot.
Pictures by Vitali Dobrinin with Kalevala-related themes were used in the book design.
The translation of Kalevala in the North Karelian was published by the Karjalan Sivistysseura. The Chairman of the Karjalan Sivistysseura Eeva-Kaisa Linna gave new books to the readers of the National Library.
The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Karelia Elena Bogdanova, the Consul of the Petrozavodsk office of the Consulate General of Finland Tuomas Kinnunen and translator Raisa Remshueva gave speeches at the presentation.
The presentation ended with a scientific seminar which was attended by famous Karelian and Finnish folklorists and researchers of the Karelian language.
