14/03/2013. Once on the Old New Year’s Day...
On the 14th of January many Russians celebrate the Old New Year. The Old New Year is a family holiday celebrated 13 days after traditional New Year. Although the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic officially adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1918, the Russian Orthodox Church continued to use the Julian calendar. The New Year became a holiday which is celebrated by both calendars.
On the 13th of January the National Library of Republic of Karelia organized a joyful family holiday “Once on the Old New Year's Day...”.

Children saw a puppet show based on a Russian folk tale ”By Pike's Wish” directed by Boris Kudryavtsev. At a free workshop organized by Natalia Kagacheva children and their parents learned the secrets of creating of the guardian angel and made with their own hands this wonderful amulet.
A researcher at the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Science Konstantin Loginov told about Chreistmastide traditions in Karelia and conducted workshops.

The same evening the National Library opened a club ”An old disc”, which gathered together admirers of Soviet music of 1950-1970s. The music program “And it snows…” was devoted to the opening of a new club. The program included winter hits sang by Maya Kristalinskaya, Zoya Rozhdesvenskya, the group “Plamya” and Eduard Khil. For this festival the specialists of the National Library prepared several exhibitions. Guests were reading books, looking at exquisite bead jewelry and collections of old photographs and New Year cards.

A well known Petrozavodsk candy store Pan Martsipan organized a sweet holiday for our guests. Handmade chocolates, chocolate games and portraits were a real present for little sweet teeth and their parents. It was possible to taste chocolate before purchase. In the kiosk opened by the bookstore Bukvoyed our visitors could buy traditional publications with great discounts and learn about a new reader.
