20/10/2025. Conference Preservation and Development of Cultural Traditions of Indigenous Peoples

The National Library of Karelia held a conference Preservation and Development of Cultural Traditions of Indigenous Peoples in the framework of the All-Russian Cultural Forum of Indigenous Peoples of Russia. The organizer of the forum is the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
Alexey Lesonen, Minister of Culture of Karelia, opened the conference. The event gathers together professionals and public figures interested in support and preservation of the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples. Tamara Purtova, Head of V. D. Polenov Russian National House of Folk Art, presented the federal experience in preservation of the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples. Karelian organizations also presented their experiences: the Regional Branch of the Assembly of the Peoples of Russia, the Kizhi Museum-Reserve, the Center for Folk Art and Cultural Initiatives of the Republic of Karelia, the Institute of Language, Literature, and History of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Vepsian Culture Society, and the Sheltozero Vepsian Ethnographic Museum.
In Russia, Vepsians live not only in Karelia but also in Leningrad and Vologda Regions. Viktoria Bazarova and Lidiya Rybakova told about preservation of cultural heritage of Vepsians. The report by Viktoria Bazarova was dedicated to the interpretation of the image of a Vepsian doll in the modern world. Lidiya Rybakova presented to conference participants the experience in popularizing Vepsian cuisine in Vologda region.
